We find that actors' assumptions and beliefs about the organization's role in the institutional field and the practice of normative, discursive work are central tenets of both the maintenance and transformation of institutions. Thornton and Ocasio (1999) define institutional logics as “the socially constructed, historical patterns of material practices, assumptions, values, beliefs, and rules by which individuals produce and reproduce their material subsistence, organize time and space, and provide meaning to their social reality” (p. 804). Specifically, we outline the ways in which non‐profit actors draw upon the competing institutional logics available to them to frame and serve their interests. We find that actors' assumptions and beliefs about the organization's role in the institutional field and the practice of normative, discursive work are central tenets of both the maintenance and transformation of institutions. Institutional logics are able to provide regularised and reproduced rules harnessing the actors on the same track.
